As I was wandering around Target last week, a display of Katy Kat Matte lipstick by CoverGirl caught my eye. The packaging is undeniably clever and was what lured me in: white with black lettering and a pop of the lipstick color at the base.
It’s seriously scary how bad I wanted to purchase this lip color based solely on the packaging. And with a price tag below $7, I couldn’t pass it up.
Then, of course, there’s Katy Perry‘s Instagram photo showing off her new vibrant line of matte lipsticks to make every girl want to try one.
I went with the pinkish-red ‘Cat Call,’ that’s what it looks like on me, but I thought it would be more purplish-red and a bit more ‘nude’ based off the color block at the bottom.
There’s nothing matte about this lipstick. When you think of matte lipsticks, you probably think long-lasting and semi-dry feeling, but that’s not what Katy Kat Matte is about at all.
According to Ulta, where the lipstick is $8.99 a tube, Perry’s line feels “creamy and moist on lips,” and I would have to agree. It really wasn’t what I was expecting, but in a good way. It’s definitely not a dry matte and it’s easy to wipe off, which may or may not be a bad thing depending on how often you’re down to re-apply.
However, my one compliant is about the color and pigment. There basically is no pigment! However, this may just be me and my slight obsession with Kylie Lip Kit, which are extremely pigmented.
I found myself having to swipe Perry’s matte lipstick a few times before I was satisfied with the color pigment. Otherwise, it’s almost a sheer color.
When it’s all said and done, Katy Kat Matte feels great on, and the color is easily darkened with more application. Next, I think I’ll be trying ‘Pink Paws’ or ‘Magenta Minx!’
