The lip balm company Evolution of Smooth, EOS, is in some hot water after a consumer suffered a major rash and blisters around her mouth.

Rachel Cronin has started a class action lawsuit against EOS claiming the company misrepresented the product, according to CNBC. Cronin said the product is marketed as organic and natural, but caused severe irritation that led to her seeking medical care.

She said she applied the Summer Fruit flavor, but it made her lips feel like sandpaper. So she applied more, which resulted in the blistering. CNBC reported flavored lip balms may cause people to lick their lips, and that creates more potential for irritation.

“[Saliva] is basically digesting away your lips,” Dr. Whitney Bowe, a dermatologist at Advanced Dermatology in New York City said. This makes it easier for people to contract a bacterial or viral infection.” — as reported by CNBC.

Yikes! That does not sound like a refreshing lip balm at all. However, CNBC also reported that just because something is natural, does not mean it’s good for you. It’s possible Cronin is simply having an allergic reaction to the lip balm flavor of her choice.

EOS responded to the lawsuit on its social media sites and said the health of its consumers is top priority. The company also stated the ingredients meet or exceed quality standards, and they believe this lawsuit is unmerited. It seems EOS is not going down without a fight!

I mean, if you’re allergic to peanuts, you wouldn’t eat them just because they’re labeled natural and organic. Well, at least I hope you wouldn’t! Perhaps this is a lesson learned for Cronin and other consumers, but I don’t think it’s EOS’ fault some people are allergic to their product.
